Derived from the G24 and G305 parental lines, it was selected for high marketable yield, strong vigour, long green spear quality and rust tolerance. Its tips remain tightly closed and show moderate purple colouring. Winter durability and the ability to maintain reliable production for many years helped this cultivar become the dominant asparagus across much of Ontario’s commercial acreage. This combination gives home gardeners dependable harvest quality in demanding northern conditions.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eGrow Guelph Millennium asparagus in full sun at a permanent site. It adapts to relatively heavy soil better than many older cultivars but still requires deep, fertile and freely draining ground. A pH close to 6.5 to 7.0 is particularly suitable. Plant in early spring, space crowns 30 to 45 cm apart and keep rows approximately 1.2 to 1.5 m apart. Maintain even moisture, control weeds without deep cultivation and apply compost in spring with balanced nutrition after the harvest period. Raised rows are useful where spring drainage is slow or uncertain.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eHarvest no spears during the first year. During the second season, pick for only one or two weeks when crowns are vigorous, then extend gradually through mid-June in later years. Cut spears at approximately 15 to 25 cm before their tips open and stop when most become thinner than a pencil. Let every new stem develop tall green fern growth, which may reach approximately 180 to 240 cm. Wait until it has browned completely after frost before cutting. Only young spears are intended for food.
