Organic Tomatillo 'Reine de Malinalco' (Physalis ixocarpa) from the seed company Gaia, a unique Mexican variety with elongated and sweet fruits

The Tomatillo 'Reine de Malinalco' , also called Reina de Malinalco , is an exceptional heirloom variety native to Malinalco, Mexico . Unlike traditional round tomatillos , this variety produces elongated fruits that are 7 to 8 cm (3 inches) long , which turn from bright green to lemon yellow when ripe. Their sweet and sour flavor with a slight lemony hint makes them a versatile ingredient, as delicious fresh as they are cooked . Their bushy, productive habit ensures a bountiful harvest for lovers of salsas, sauces or stews .

Spread: bushy and vigorous habit
Plant height: 90 to 120 cm
Quantity per pack: ± 20 seeds
Companion plants: basil, coriander, garlic, marigold, yarrow, borage, onions, parsley
Enemy plants: corn, dill, potatoes, eggplants

Cultivation method:

Sow seeds indoors 6 weeks before the last frost , then transplant outdoors in late spring when the soil is well warmed. Plant 1/4 to 1/2" (6 to 12 mm) deep , spacing plants 18-24" (45 to 60 cm) apart and rows 36-48" (90 to 120 cm) apart . Germination takes 15-20 days at an optimum temperature of 70°F ( 21°C) . This tomatillo tolerates partial shade , but prefers full sun and well-drained soil for optimum production.

Harvest and uses:

The fruits are ready to be harvested when their skin turns brown and begins to split . They are ideal for fresh consumption , added in slices to summer salads , or incorporated into homemade sauces and salsas . Their unique, slightly lemony flavor pairs perfectly with Mexican dishes and sweet and savory preparations .
