description
Nodding Beggarticks (Bidens cernua) is a native annual of wet habitats, ideal for planting rain gardens, ditches, riparian buffers, and temporarily flooded areas. Its bright yellow flowers appear from late summer until the first frosts, bringing color and vitality to the garden when many other plants are finishing their cycle. Highly valuable for late-season pollinators, it attracts bees, hoverflies, and other beneficial insects with nectar- and pollen-rich blooms. Its natural habit and rapid growth make it an excellent species for ecological landscaping and wetland restoration.
Nodding Beggarticks thrives in loamy to clay soils that remain wet or temporarily flooded, establishing quickly when moisture stays consistent. It grows in full sun to partial shade and requires little maintenance once planted in a suitable site. Steady watering is recommended if the soil dries out, especially during active growth. As an annual, it can self-sow naturally when seeds are left in place in autumn, allowing it to return year after year in favorable wet areas.
In the garden, Nodding Beggarticks pairs beautifully with wetland native plants such as Cardinal Flower, Northern Blue Flag Iris, Spotted Joe-Pye Weed, and Prairie Ironweed. Together, they create natural plantings rich in biodiversity and adapted to cool, moist, or flooded soils. Its achenes produced in autumn also feed some wildlife and support the natural renewal of colonies. With its late flowering, tolerance of saturated soils, and ecological value, Bidens cernua is an excellent choice for rain gardens and wet soil stabilization projects.
