description
Flat-Topped White Aster (Doellingeria umbellata) is a tall native perennial distinguished by its broad clusters of bright, highly decorative white flowers from July to September. Its upright habit, reaching 1.2 to 1.75 m (4 to 5.7 ft) in height, adds strong vertical structure to naturalistic borders, moist shorelines, and pollinator gardens. Its green foliage creates a soft, natural presence, perfect for enriching ecological landscapes in Quebec. Hardy to -40°C (-40°F), this deciduous perennial returns reliably each year and extends late-season ornamental interest while actively supporting biodiversity.
Flat-Topped White Aster prefers full sun to light partial shade in fertile, moist to wet, well-drained loamy to clay soil. It does not tolerate prolonged drought well during active growth, so regular watering encourages abundant flowering and a vigorous habit. Sow seeds in autumn or in spring after cold stratification, lightly covering them with 3 to 5 mm of moist growing medium. A light application of compost in spring is usually enough to support healthy growth. Dry stems may be left standing through winter to shelter beneficial insects, then cut back the following spring.
In the garden, Flat-Topped White Aster is ideal for riparian buffers, rain gardens, naturalized plantings, and ecological restoration projects. It pairs beautifully with Spotted Joe-Pye Weed, Prairie Ironweed, Northern Blue Flag Iris, and Cardinal Flower, creating plantings rich in texture and biodiversity. Its late-season bloom provides nectar and pollen for bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects as floral resources begin to decline. Achenes left in place may also support some birds, further strengthening the ecological value of this elegant and long-lived native perennial.
