Native perennials for wet areas
Blue Flag Iris (Iris versicolor) – Seeds
Iris versicolor
Discover the plant
Blue Flag Iris (Iris versicolor) is an emblematic native perennial of Quebec wetlands, recognized by blue-violet flowers delicately marked with white and yellow. Blooming from May through July, the flowers rise above upright, narrow, sword-shaped foliage that retains strong structural value after flowering ends. Plants generally reach 45 to 90 cm tall and gradually form dense clumps through spreading rhizomes. Exceptionally hardy in Zones 3 to 8, Blue Flag Iris returns reliably after severe winters and is an outstanding choice for shorelines, rain gardens, wetland borders, and naturalized landscapes inspired by the native habitats of Quebec and eastern Canada.
Blue Flag Iris prefers full sun or partial shade and loamy to clay soil that remains moist, wet, or temporarily saturated. It also tolerates shallow water at the edge of a pond, provided the rhizomes are not kept too deeply submerged for extended periods. Seeds generally benefit from light scarification followed by moist cold stratification before spring sowing, although they may also be planted outdoors in autumn. Sow them approximately 10 mm deep, maintain constant moisture, and allow time for uneven germination. A light spring application of mature compost is usually sufficient to support growth without encouraging excessive, soft foliage.
In the garden, Blue Flag Iris is ideal for shoreline buffers, rain gardens, vegetated ditches, natural ponds, and projects designed to stabilize wet soil. Its flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinating insects, while the rhizomes help hold banks and reduce erosion. Pair it with Cardinal Flower, Spotted Joe-Pye Weed, Water Avens, and Canada Mannagrass to create a lush native planting adapted to wet conditions. All parts of Iris versicolor, especially the rhizomes, are toxic if ingested, so the plant should be grown strictly for ornamental and ecological purposes and kept away from pets and livestock.
