Physostegia virginiana
Discover the plant
Obedient Plant (Physostegia virginiana) is an upright native perennial known for long spikes of pale pink to violet-pink tubular flowers. Individual blooms can be gently repositioned along the stem and will temporarily remain in place, a distinctive feature that inspired the common English name obedient plant. From July through October, the extended flowering period adds height, colour, and movement to borders, rain gardens, and prairie-style landscapes. Dark green foliage forms a dense clump, while flowering stems generally reach 60 to 100 cm. Exceptionally hardy, this perennial returns reliably in Quebec gardens and becomes more substantial as the root system matures.
Obedient plant prefers full sun or partial shade and loamy to clay-based soil that is rich in organic matter and consistently moist. Even moisture encourages abundant flowering and reduces stress during warm weather. Apply compost in spring and water whenever the soil begins to dry. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can produce softer stems and too much foliage. This perennial spreads gradually through rhizomes and may develop vigorous colonies. In Quebec gardens, remove or contain outward-growing shoots where space is limited and divide established clumps every few years to maintain flowering, airflow, balance, and manageable growth.
Obedient plant suits pollinator gardens, riparian plantings, pond edges, and moist sections of naturalistic landscapes. Nectar-rich flowers attract bees, bumblebees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and many other beneficial insects for several weeks. Its dense root system also helps cover and stabilize moist soil. It pairs naturally with spotted Joe-Pye weed, blue vervain, cardinal flower, and blue flag iris. Long flowering stems can be used in fresh bouquets, while mature capsules contribute seed and autumn texture. Its combination of late-season colour, wildlife value, and adaptation to moist ground makes Physostegia virginiana especially useful in ecological Canadian gardens.
