Sweet Everlasting
This native annual improves biodiversity by providing an important late-season food source for pollinating insects. It grows easily in poor soils and requires very little maintenance.

description
Sweet Everlasting (Pseudognaphalium obtusifolium) is a subtle yet valuable native annual admired for its silvery gray-green foliage, lightly aromatic leaves, and strong ecological value. Growing 30 to 90 cm (12 to 35 in) tall with a spread of 20 to 40 cm (8 to 16 in), it forms a light, natural silhouette that blends beautifully into wild gardens and native meadows. From August through October, its small creamy white flower clusters persist for weeks, adding late-season interest to the garden. Hardy as seed and well adapted to Canadian growing conditions, this resilient native wildflower thrives in poor soils and low-maintenance landscapes.
Sweet Everlasting grows best in full sun to partial shade in poor, light, well-drained sandy to loamy soil. Surface sow Pseudognaphalium obtusifolium seeds in autumn or in spring after cold stratification, as light helps promote germination. At 18 to 22°C (64 to 72°F), germination usually occurs within 20 to 30 days when the growing medium remains lightly moist. Once rooted, this native annual tolerates dry periods very well and needs little watering. Fertilization is rarely necessary; a light compost application is enough in very poor soils. It can also be grown in containers using a sharply drained growing medium.
In naturalistic gardens, rock gardens, dry slopes, and pollinator-friendly plantings, Sweet Everlasting adds distinctive silvery texture while supporting late-season biodiversity. It pairs beautifully with Goldenrod, Black-eyed Susan, Wild Bergamot, and Butterfly Milkweed. Its late bloom provides nectar and pollen for native bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects when floral resources become scarce. The aromatic leaves have also been used traditionally in herbal infusions, though today Pseudognaphalium obtusifolium is grown mainly for its ornamental value, ecological importance, and easy naturalization.
