Organic 'Clemson Spineless' Okra
Organic 'Clemson Spineless' okra (Abelmoschus esculentus), offered by the seed company Aimers
This heirloom variety produces vigorous, upright plants bearing smooth, tender, thornless, light green pods. The fruits are flavorful and versatile, excellent in stir-fries, soups, and stews, while the large, creamy, hibiscus-like flowers add ornamental interest to the garden. Highly tolerant of heat and drought, this okra provides a consistent harvest throughout the summer.

Planting and maintenance:
Sow directly outdoors in late spring, once the soil has warmed up, at a depth of about 1.25 to 2 cm, in full sun. Thin the seedlings to 30 to 45 cm apart to allow for good air circulation. Water moderately once established, as okra tolerates heat well. Harvest the pods frequently, when they are 5 to 7.5 cm long, to maintain a tender texture and encourage continuous production.
