identification
description
Organic 'San Marzano' tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), offered by the seed company Aimers
This heirloom Italian tomato variety produces elongated, plum-like, bright red fruits with dense, meaty, and slightly juicy flesh. Weighing approximately 150 g, the tomatoes contain few seeds and offer a sweet flavor highly prized for sauces, canning, and cooking. The vigorous, indeterminate plant ensures staggered fruit ripening throughout the season.
Propagation: Indoor sowing
Plant height: 60 to 80 cm
Package size: Approximately 12 seeds
Harvest time: Approximately 80 days after transplanting
Frost tolerance: Killed by frost
Companion plants: Basil, onions, carrots
Incompatible plants: Potatoes
Planting and maintenance:
Start seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost, in a soilless substrate kept between 21 and 24°C to encourage rapid germination. Transplant the seedlings into individual pots, then harden them off before transplanting outdoors in late spring. Plant in full sun in rich, well-drained soil, spacing plants about 90 cm apart for indeterminate varieties. Water regularly and evenly, mulch to retain moisture, and provide support for the plants. Harvest as they ripen for optimal quality.
