Organic 'Dark Green' zucchini (Cucurbita pepo), offered by the seed company Aimers

This heirloom summer squash variety forms a vigorous, bushy plant with dense foliage. The smooth, elongated, dark green fruits are best harvested young for tender flesh and a sweet flavor, but can also be left to mature for cooking and baking. Highly productive, one or two plants are often sufficient to ensure a bountiful harvest all summer long.

Propagation: Direct sowing in late spring or indoor sowing
Plant height: 60 to 90 cm
Package size: Approximately 20 seeds
Harvest time: Approximately 55 days
Frost tolerance: Killed by frost
Companion plants: Corn, beans, nasturtiums
Incompatible plants: Potatoes

Planting and maintenance:
Sow directly outdoors from late May to mid-June, at a depth of about 2.5 cm, in warm, rich, well-drained soil in full sun. Plant in mounds spaced about 2.4 m apart and thin to three plants per location after germination. Water regularly without waterlogging the soil and harvest the young fruits frequently to encourage continuous production.
