Canadian Saskatoon
Amelanchier canadensis, also known as Canadian serviceberry, is a versatile native shrub, particularly valued for its airy spring bloom of white flowers in delicate clusters, which brightens woodlands and naturalistic gardens. Very hardy and well-adapted to Quebec's climate, it features medium green foliage that turns golden yellow to orange-red in autumn, as well as small, edible blue-black fruits that are sweet and rich in antioxidants, much loved by birds. Its naturally narrow to spreading habit depending on size, good tolerance for partial shade, and ability to adapt to various soil types make it an excellent choice for informal hedges, woodland edges, or edible mass plantings. Discreet, resilient, and ornamental, the Canadian serviceberry is an essential component of biodiverse northern landscapes.
