Product code : GAIAS-0309

Melanzana Rossa Di Rotonda Eggplant organic seeds is part of our organic seeds for Canada selection. A truly scrumptious and unique member of the eggplant family, it tastes like a combination of eggplant, tomatoes and peppers. It is traditionally made into gourmet caponata or preserved and pickled. Read the packet directions before starting and keep the label so the variety remains clearly identified throughout the season. Prepare a clean, loose, well-drained growing medium and moisten it before placing the seeds so they are not displaced by the first watering. Keep the seedbed evenly moist without standing water because excess moisture reduces air around developing roots.

Melanzana Rossa di Rotonda Red Eggplant organic seeds (Solanum aethiopicum) This Italian heirloom belongs to the African eggplant species rather than the common purple eggplant species. Round fruit reaches approximately 8 cm and changes from green-orange to intense orange and finally glossy red as it ripens. Firm flesh does not darken quickly after cutting, and the flavour recalls eggplant, tomato, and pepper. The fruit is traditionally prepared in caponata, pickled, or preserved in olive oil. The Gaia packet contains approximately 20 certified organic seeds for growing this distinctive warm-season vegetable. Its vivid colour also makes it an eye-catching addition to an edible garden.

Sow indoors 8 to 12 weeks before the last frost. Plant seed approximately 6 mm deep in a fine seed-starting mix and maintain 23 to 30°C for steady emergence. Germination generally takes 7 to 14 days. Provide bright light as soon as seedlings appear and pot them on as needed. Harden plants off gradually, then transplant when daytime temperatures reach at least 18°C, nights remain above 10°C, and all frost risk has passed. Space plants 45 to 60 cm apart to allow light and airflow around the developing fruit. A location sheltered from cold winds supports strong establishment.

Grow this red eggplant in full sun and rich, warm, well-drained soil. Maintain even moisture without saturating roots, especially during flowering and fruit enlargement. Mulch after the soil has warmed to help retain moisture. Harvest fruit after it develops a glossy orange-to-red colour while the skin remains smooth and the flesh is still firm. Cut the stem with clean pruners to protect the plant. Only the fruit prepared as a vegetable is intended for consumption; do not eat leaves or stems. Store freshly harvested fruit under cool, moderate conditions and use it promptly. Check colour and firmness frequently as harvest approaches.

Frequently asked questions

03 How long does germination take?
7 to 14 days Read the packet directions before starting and keep the label so the variety remains clearly identified throughout the season. Prepare a clean, loose, well-drained growing medium and moisten it before placing the seeds so they are not displaced by the first watering. Keep the seedbed evenly moist without standing water because excess moisture reduces air around developing roots. Move seedlings into bright light as soon as they emerge and rotate containers regularly to encourage balanced growth. Where several seedlings compete for the same space, thin carefully and retain the strongest plants without disturbing their roots. Before outdoor planting, gradually acclimatize young plants to wind, sunlight, and changing temperatures over several days.
04 How should planting be organized?
Set plants in full sun, 45 to 60 cm apart, in rich, warm, well-drained soil. Leave enough room for air to circulate through the foliage and for every plant to receive direct light. Mulch after the soil has warmed to help maintain even moisture. Avoid immediately repeating eggplants, tomatoes, peppers, or potatoes in the same location. Rotating with unrelated plant families reduces the likelihood that crop-specific soil problems will accumulate over time. Read the packet directions before starting and keep the label so the variety remains clearly identified throughout the season.
