description
Organic Detroit Beet (Beta vulgaris ‘Detroit’) is a classic, reliable variety known for its round, uniform, deep red roots and tender, sweet, flavorful flesh. Its vigorous dark green edible foliage adds ornamental value to vegetable gardens, edible borders, and kitchen gardens. Productive and fast growing, it provides generous harvests about 55 days after sowing. In the kitchen, it is delicious roasted, steamed, pickled, used in salads, or stored for later use, while the young leaves can be enjoyed fresh or sautéed.
Sow Organic Detroit Beet directly in the garden from May through July in full sun to partial shade. It prefers loose, cool, well-drained soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH, enriched with mature compost before sowing. Cover seeds with 1 to 2 cm (0.4 to 0.8 in) of soil, keep moisture consistent until germination, then thin seedlings to encourage well-formed roots. Water regularly, especially during dry periods, to reduce moisture stress, cracking, and fibrous roots. Successive sowings extend the harvest into autumn.
In the garden, Organic Detroit Beet fits perfectly into family vegetable gardens, deep containers, organic gardens, and productive edible landscapes. It pairs well with Garlic, which complements its cultivation while adding diversity and balance to vegetable rows. Avoid planting it near Pole Beans and Mustard. Roots can be harvested young or allowed to size up depending on your needs, then stored very well in a cool, humid place. If a few plants are kept into their second year, their flowers attract beneficial garden insects.
