Broad beans are notable for their ability to germinate in cool soils, making them ideal for early spring planting, at the same time as peas. Sow seeds directly at a depth of 5 cm, spaced 15-20 cm apart, in rows 45 cm apart.
Ensure the soil is rich, well-drained and exposed to full sun. Maintain regular moisture, especially during seed filling. Provide light support if necessary to prevent the stems from bending under the weight of the pods. Germination occurs in about 8 days.
