Discover the plant
Organic ‘Resina’ calendula (Calendula officinalis ‘Resina’), also called pot marigold, is a robust annual grown for large bright-orange to golden-yellow flowers. The variety is recognized for especially resin-rich flower heads that feel sticky and are valued in infused oils, craft dyes, and external botanical preparations. This profile makes no therapeutic promise. Petals are edible when taken from correctly identified plants grown with products authorized for food crops; remove the flower base before adding them to salads, rice, soups, or garnishes. Flowers also support various visiting insects through a long season. Regular picking provides repeated material while keeping the planting colourful.
Direct-sow early in spring as soon as soil can be worked, or start seed indoors approximately four to six weeks before last frost. Place seed approximately 0.5 to 1.5 cm deep and keep the bed evenly moist until emergence. Space plants approximately 20 to 30 cm apart in full sun or bright partial shade. Choose loose moderately fertile well-drained soil. Excess nitrogen favours leaves over flowers. Water during establishment and prolonged drought, then allow the surface to dry slightly between irrigations. Sources indicate approximately 45 to 60 cm height and 55 to 60 days to first flowers. Successive sowings may extend the period of fresh bloom.
Harvest fully opened flower heads in the morning after dew dries. Wear gloves when resin irritates skin, use clean scissors, and place flowers in a ventilated basket. For drying, spread them in one layer in a dark dry ventilated place, then discard every mouldy or poorly dried flower. Cut faded blooms regularly to stimulate new buds, or allow several heads to mature when self-sowing is desired and lot provenance permits seed saving. Monitor aphids, slugs, and powdery mildew; provide spacing and water at soil level. Flowering may continue until frost. Keep culinary petals separate from material intended only for crafts or exposed to products unsuitable for food crops.
