Organic ‘Kaleidoscope’ nasturtium mix (Tropaeolum majus ‘Kaleidoscope Mix’) is an ornamental and edible annual grown for rounded leaves and warm-coloured flowers. Sources describe a compact mixture approximately 40 cm tall, including cream, yellow, gold, orange, coral, cherry rose, and red tones. Because this is a mixture, the presence and proportion of every colour cannot be guaranteed in one packet or a small planting. Flowers and young leaves have a peppery flavour suited to salads and garnishes, while buds and young seed pods may be pickled using a safe recipe. Its manageable size suits borders, containers, and edible ornamental beds.
Direct-sow after last frost once soil has warmed, or start several seeds in biodegradable pots two to three weeks earlier to avoid disturbing roots. Soak seed for several hours if desired, then sow approximately 1.5 to 2.5 cm deep. Space plants approximately 20 to 30 cm apart in sun or bright partial shade. Choose light moderately fertile well-drained soil; excess nitrogen produces abundant leaves and fewer flowers. Water regularly during establishment, then allow the surface to dry slightly between irrigations without prolonged wilting. Avoid transplanting oversized seedlings because nasturtium roots respond poorly to disturbance.
Harvest freshly opened flowers and young leaves in the morning after dew dries. Use only correctly identified plants grown without products unauthorized for edible crops, then wash them gently. Remove faded blooms to maintain a tidy appearance and encourage flowering, or allow several seeds to mature only when provenance and reproductive status are confirmed. Monitor aphids, slugs, and caterpillars; a water spray or hand removal is often sufficient. In containers, use a well-drained pot at least 20 to 30 cm wide. Flowering generally continues from summer to first frost when heat and moisture remain moderate. Discard damaged, mouldy, contaminated, or incorrectly identified tissue.
