Organic ‘Parisian’ carrot (Daucus carota subsp. sativus ‘Parisian’), also called ‘Paris Market’ or ‘Tonda di Parigi’ in several catalogues, is an old French carrot with small round orange roots. Its shape resembles a large radish or ball and generally reaches approximately 2.5 to 5 cm in diameter depending on soil and harvest stage. Flesh is described as mild, tender, and sweet. This morphology suits shallower soil, raised beds, and containers without eliminating the need for fine loose ground. Roots may be served whole, roasted, glazed, steamed, pickled, or raw when young and sound. Their compact shape also makes visual maturity checks straightforward.
Direct-sow as soon as soil can be worked, then repeat sowings every two or three weeks through midsummer when enough season remains. Place seed approximately 0.5 to 1 cm deep in a fine moist well-drained bed. Keep the surface continuously moist during the 10-to-21-day germination period. Thin with scissors to approximately 4 to 6 cm, enough room for round roots to enlarge without touching. Remove stones and clods, incorporate mature compost, and avoid fresh manure. Full sun supports growth, while bright partial shade may limit drying during heat. Apply light mulch after emergence without covering crowns.
Sources generally place maturity between 50 and 70 days. Begin inspecting near 50 days by exposing the rounded shoulder gently, then lift one sample while soil is slightly moist. Harvest baby roots after they form a satisfactory ball or let them enlarge without waiting until they become fibrous. Trim tops while leaving a short stem and refrigerate roots separately. Monitor carrot rust fly, flea beetles, slugs, surface crusting, and irregular moisture. Short shape reduces several deep-soil problems, but an overcrowded row still produces very small roots. Label the row so ‘Parisian’ is not confused with radishes. Discard roots showing rot, contamination, or uncertain storage history.
