Purple Haze Carrot, ecologically grown seeds
Daucus carota subsp. sativus
Product code : GAIAS-0303
Purple Haze Carrot, ecologically grown seeds (Daucus carota subsp. sativus) This open-pollinated heirloom produces roots with vivid purple skin and a contrasting orange core. Sweet flavour and crisp texture suit fresh snacks, salads, roasted vegetables, and cooked dishes. The packet contains approximately 100 ecologically grown seeds; Gaia does not present them as certified organic. Foliage may reach 12 to 18 inches. Healthy young leaves are edible in small amounts, although the root remains the principal harvest. Exterior colour may soften slightly during cooking without reducing the quality of the flesh. The striking two-tone roots add visual interest to fresh vegetable plates and mixed harvest baskets.
Direct sow as soon as soil can be worked, then repeat sowing approximately every three weeks through midsummer to spread the harvest. Plant seed about 1/2 inch deep in a fine, loose, stone-free seedbed. Germination generally takes 14 to 21 days between 15 and 21°C. Keep the surface evenly moist throughout emergence. Thin seedlings to 1 to 2 inches apart and leave 18 to 24 inches between rows. Choose full sun for optimal growth; light late-day shade can be tolerated where summers are hot. Avoid transplanting because straight roots develop best when seed is sown in place. Consistent spacing helps roots reach a uniform shape without competing for water or nutrients.
Maturity generally occurs in 70 to 75 days according to the Gaia envelope. Harvest when root shoulders have developed their purple colour and reached the preferred diameter. Loosen soil before pulling to avoid breaking roots. For storage, remove tops while leaving a short stem, brush away soil without washing carrots intended for longer keeping, and hold near 0°C with high humidity and good airflow. Regular harvesting preserves tender texture and frees space for successive sowings. Check stored roots periodically and remove any that soften or show decay. Cool freshly harvested roots promptly to preserve crisp texture and reduce moisture loss during storage.
