Kordial F1 Kohlrabi organic seeds (Brassica oleracea var. gongylodes) This early hybrid produces pale green swollen stems measuring 3 to 5 inches with a slightly flattened round shape. Dense, crisp flesh resists cracking when growth remains steady. Bejo also notes upright dark-green foliage and high resistance to Fusarium yellows. Gaia lists high resistance to downy mildew and Fusarium yellows plus intermediate resistance to black rot. The packet contains approximately 15 certified organic seeds for spring or autumn production. Its moderate size and firm texture suits both fresh snacks and a broad range of cooked dishes.

Start seed indoors four to six weeks before planting or direct sow for a spring or fall crop. Plant seed approximately 1.3 cm deep. Germination generally takes 3 to 10 days between 7 and 29°C, with an optimum near 26°C. Space plants approximately 10 cm apart and rows 30 to 45 cm apart. Swollen stems reach maturity about 53 days after planting. Do not allow plants to run short of water because uneven growth can make the texture more fibrous. Thin promptly so the remaining plants develop evenly without crowding.

Grow Kordial in full sun or light partial shade and fertile, cool, well-drained soil. It performs best in spring and autumn when temperatures are moderate. Harvest as soon as the swollen stem is clearly visible above the soil and measures approximately 3 to 5 inches while the flesh remains tender. Cut at the base, remove the leaves, and refrigerate kohlrabi for up to about three weeks. The crisp stem can be eaten raw, grated, or cut into sticks and is also suitable for roasting, sautéing, or adding to soups. Tender young leaves are edible as well.

When several seedlings are competing for the same space, carefully thin them out to keep the most vigorous ones without disturbing their roots. Before outdoor planting, gradually acclimate the young plants to wind, sun, and temperature changes for several days. Respect the indicated spacing so that air circulates between the plants and each has sufficient light, water, and nutrients.
