Common name

Type
Shrub
Family
Myricaceae

Comptonia peregrina, commonly known as sweet fern, is a low-growing, spreading native shrub, recognized for its finely dissected and highly aromatic foliage. Although it resembles a fern in appearance, it is a true woody shrub with a dense, naturalized habit, ideal for dry gardens, embankments, sandy soils, and ecological landscaping. Its deciduous grayish-green foliage releases a pleasant resinous scent when crushed and turns beautiful yellow to bronze hues in the fall. Highly resistant to drought and wind, Comptonia peregrina plays an important ecological role in stabilizing poor soils and promoting biodiversity. Perfectly adapted to Quebec's conditions, it is an excellent choice for low-maintenance naturalistic gardens.
