Cotinus coggygria ‘Royal Purple’ is an iconic ornamental shrub, renowned for its intense dark purple foliage and spectacular appearance throughout the season. It forms a dense, rounded, and well-branched shrub habit, ideal as a standalone specimen, in contrasting mass plantings, or as a decorative informal hedge. Its deciduous foliage, a deep, almost black purple, maintains excellent summer color before turning scarlet red in autumn. In early summer, large, airy inflorescences appear, resembling a cloud of smoke, which gives it its common name of smoketree. Hardy and well-adapted to Quebec conditions in a sheltered location and well-drained soil, ‘Royal Purple’ adds structure, color, and character to the garden.
