Imposing conifer the Douglas Fir - A giant of old-growth forests

Douglas fir seeds (Pseudotsuga menziesii) , offered by the OSC seed company.

This majestic species, native to the coastal forests of British Columbia, is known for its size and ecological versatility. Douglas-firs frequently reach heights of 75 m or more in old-growth forests. They provide valuable habitat for a variety of birds and small mammals, and their seeds are a food source for a multitude of species. Highly valued for reforestation, this conifer is also used in naturalization and restoration projects due to its rapid growth. They prefer deep, moist, sandy loam soils, while remaining a hardy species in a variety of conditions.

How to grow:

Natural stratification of tree seeds is best done outdoors during the winter. Sow in the fall, 6mm deep, directly into the ground. Indoors, mix the seeds with a moistened, peat-based substrate and refrigerate for 12-20 weeks. In the spring, plant in a sheltered, sunny spot to encourage germination. Transplant the seedlings once they are well-rooted. These trees thrive in well-drained soils rich in organic matter.

A perfect choice for large spaces, reforestation and environmental restoration projects.

The availability of our seeds varies depending on seasonal availability, production schedules and supplier inventory. Certain varieties may only be offered for a limited time based on their natural growth cycle, sowing period or available stock.
