Organic Columbine (Aquilegia vulgaris), offered by Gaia, an elegant and ornamental perennial

Columbine ( Aquilegia vulgaris ) is a refined perennial that brightens up the garden with its drooping flowers in various shades of red, blue, yellow and white . Much appreciated by gardeners for its delicate appearance and natural charm, it also attracts hummingbirds and other pollinators . Suitable for cottage gardens, borders, rockeries and undergrowth , it naturalizes easily and returns faithfully each year. Cold-hardy and undemanding, it brings a rustic and romantic touch to any green space.

Plant height: 60-90 cm
Quantity per pack: ± 50 seeds
Companion plants: Foxglove, bellflower, ferns, hostas, perennial geranium, heuchera
Enemy plants: None known

Cultivation method

Seeds require cold stratification for 4-6 weeks before sowing. Sow indoors 10-12 weeks before last frost, or directly in place in fall for natural germination the following spring. Partial shade to full sun exposure , in moist, light, well-drained soil . Germination is slow ( 30-90 days ), so patience is essential. Once established, columbine will self-seed and requires little maintenance .

Flowering and maintenance

Flowering occurs from mid-spring to early summer , with elegant flower spikes that sway gracefully in the wind. To prolong flowering , remove spent flowers , or allow to go to seed to encourage self-sowing . Pruning the stems after flowering helps maintain dense, healthy foliage .

Botanical anecdote

The scientific name Aquilegia is said to come from the Latin "aquila" , meaning "eagle" , in reference to the shape of its petals reminiscent of bird talons . Formerly used in folk medicine , columbine was associated with the treatment of liver and skin conditions , although all parts of the plant are now recognized as toxic .
