Discover the plant
Common Milkweed is the French name for Gaia's Common Milkweed product. This perennial of the genus Asclepias, in the Apocynaceae family, is offered for flower gardens focused on insect observation. Gaia describes fragrant, pink to lavender flowers during the summer and rhizomatous growth. Therefore, plan for an area where the plant can spread without disturbing neighbors or pathways. Milkweeds play a special role for monarchs: their leaves can feed caterpillars, while the flowers attract pollinators. This ecological benefit pertains to the garden; it does not make the plant a food crop.
Prepare the seeds by taking into account their need for cold, moist stratification before sowing. Keep the substrate slightly moistened during this preparation and clearly label the container. Then, choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil and enough space to follow the development of the clump. When planting, handle the root ball with care to limit root disturbance. Water to encourage establishment, then check the actual soil moisture before watering again. Mark the location, especially if the shoots are still small, to distinguish them from weeds that need to be removed during initial weeding.
Examine the leaves before taking any action: a garden for butterflies must also leave room for the caterpillars that feed there. Avoid systematically treating nibbled foliage and take the time to identify its visitors. After flowering, pods may contain seeds with silky hairs that facilitate their dispersal. Remove these pods before they open if you wish to control self-seeding. Wear gloves for maintenance and avoid contact of the sap with your eyes. Milkweeds can be harmful if ingested; do not prepare any recipes or homemade remedies from this horticultural collector's plant.
