A heritage variety cultivated over a century ago in southeastern New Mexico , it owes its name to Mrs. Burns, who passed on seeds from a family selection. Commercially introduced in 1983 by Native Seeds/Search, it has since become a national benchmark for lemon basil enthusiasts, both for its consistent aroma and its ease of cultivation .

Farming method
Sow the seeds 6 weeks before the last frost , at a depth of 0.6 cm , in a light, well-drained substrate. It is recommended to soak the seeds for up to 12 hours in lukewarm water to improve germination, which generally occurs in 8 to 14 days , at an ideal temperature of 23 to 29°C . Transplant outdoors or into pots after all risk of frost has passed, spacing the plants 25 to 30 cm apart.
Basil prefers full sun (level 3) and moderate watering (level 2) . Warm, fertile, and well-drained soil promotes rapid growth and a strong aromatic concentration.
Harvesting and preservation
Harvest the leaves regularly to encourage growth. Pinching the plant involves removing, with your fingers or clean pruning shears, the tip of a stem just above a node where two leaves emerge. This prevents flowering, encourages branching, and results in a denser, more productive plant. When the plant reaches about 15 cm (6 inches) , cutting the main stems back to this height promotes vigorous regrowth. Harvest before flowering, as the appearance of flowers alters the flavor of the leaves.
For storage, keep the unwashed leaves in the refrigerator, ideally around 0°C , as excessive humidity can cause browning.
