Organic 'Red Genovese' basil (Ocimum basilicum) from the seed company Gaia, a colorful Genovese basil with a sweet and spicy flavor

'Red Genovese' basil forms a vigorous, well-branched plant with broad, glossy, intensely reddish-purple leaves , providing a striking contrast in the garden. The thick, supple leaves retain the aromatic signature of classic Genovese basil , with a sweet, slightly spicy flavor enhanced by a subtle clove scent . This combination of deep color and balanced aroma makes it a variety that is as decorative as it is culinary.

A descendant of Italian basil varieties, this red basil is distinguished by its excellent heat tolerance and steady growth in full sun. It is prized for making colorful pestos , fresh salads , and roasted vegetables , as well as for its ornamental value in pots or borders. Both the leaves and flowers are edible, allowing for extended use throughout the season.

Farming method

Sow the seeds 6 weeks before the last frost , at a depth of 0.6 cm , in a light, well-drained substrate. It is recommended to soak the seeds for up to 12 hours in lukewarm water to promote even germination, which is generally observed in 8 to 14 days , at an optimal temperature of 23 to 29°C . Transplant outdoors or into containers after all risk of frost has passed, spacing the plants 10 to 20 cm apart, in fertile, well-drained soil.

'Red Genovese' basil prefers full sun (level 3) and moderate watering (level 2) . Consistent warmth promotes intense leaf color and aroma development.

Harvesting and preservation

Harvest the leaves regularly to encourage growth. Pinching the plant involves removing the tip of a stem just above a point where two leaves emerge; this promotes branching and results in a denser, more productive plant. When the plant reaches about 15 cm (6 inches) , cutting the main stems back to this height encourages vigorous regrowth. Harvest before flowering to preserve the aromatic quality.

For storage, keep the unwashed leaves in the refrigerator, around 0°C , as excessive humidity causes browning.
