Organic Irish Molucella ( Moluccella laevis ) from the seed company Gaia, a green elegance for fresh and dried bouquets

Irish Bells , also called Irish Bells , are a spectacular and unique plant prized for their bright green, chalice-shaped flowers that add volume and texture to floral arrangements. Cultivated since the 16th century , they are popular in both fresh and dried bouquets , where their openwork bells create a refined architectural effect .

With its slender shape that can reach 90 to 120 cm , it is an excellent choice for structuring flower beds , while attracting pollinators and lovers of artistic floral compositions . Although its name evokes Ireland, this plant is actually native to the Middle East , but its intense green hue inspired this name in homage to the lush Irish landscapes .

Did you know?

Despite its appearance, the green "bells" of the Irish Molucella are not the actual flowers , but bracts that surround small, inconspicuous white flowers nestled inside. This floral foliage persists long after flowering, making it an ideal plant for drying and long-lasting decoration .

Traditionally, this flower is also considered a lucky charm and symbolizes prosperity and luck in the language of flowers.

Cultivation method

Irish Molucella is an annual plant that self-sows , ideal for a garden with a natural and romantic style.

  • Cold stratify the seeds for 2 weeks by placing the seeds in a damp cloth in the refrigerator.

  • Sow indoors in spring, 8 to 10 weeks before the last frost , pressing the seeds lightly onto the surface of the substrate without covering them, as they require light to germinate .

  • Ideal germination temperature: 18 to 20°C . Germination can take 14 to 28 days .

  • Transplant into the ground when outdoor temperatures reach 10°C and the risk of frost has passed .

  • Spacing: 25 to 30 cm (10-12") between plants and 40 to 45 cm (16-18") between rows .

  • Moderate watering , as the plant tolerates relatively dry conditions well.

To prolong flowering , remove faded flowers and regularly harvest the stems when fully ripe.

Harvesting and conservation

  • Harvest the stems when the green bracts are fully open , usually 90 to 110 days after sowing .

  • For use in fresh bouquets , immediately place cut stems in water.

  • To dry , hang them upside down in a dark, ventilated place for 2 to 3 weeks . Once dried, they retain their shape and color , perfect for dried arrangements.

Ideas for use in the garden and in decoration

  • Integrate it into flower beds for a touch of verticality and texture.

  • Pair it with pastel flowers like peonies, roses and delphiniums for a romantic vibe.

  • Use it in a dried bouquet , where it combines with yarrow, lavender or immortelles.

  • Create modern arrangements , combining it with white flowers and grasses for a clean, elegant look.

With its graphic appearance, its bright green color and its fascinating history , the Irish Molucella is an essential flower for gardeners and florists in search of originality and refinement .
