Organic 'Sugar Pie' pumpkin (Cucurbita spp.) from the seed company Gaia, a sweet heirloom variety ideal for pies and cooking

Their compact size makes them particularly well-suited to small gardens , while still offering remarkable culinary quality.

Farming method

Soak the seeds in lukewarm water for up to 24 hours and lightly scarify them to encourage germination. Sow at a depth of 2.5 cm , either indoors 3 to 4 weeks before the last frost , or directly outdoors in late May or early June , when the soil temperature reaches 25°C . For outdoor cultivation, sow 2 to 3 seeds per hill , spaced 4.5 to 6 meters apart, then thin to one plant when the seedlings reach 7 to 10 cm .

Pumpkins prefer a sunny location (level 3) and consistent watering (level 3) . Rich, well-drained soil promotes the development of tasty, well-formed fruit.

Harvesting and preservation

Harvest when the fruit is a rich orange color , the peel becomes difficult to cut with a fingernail , and the stain on the ground changes from creamy yellow to orange . Cut the fruit, leaving about 5 cm of stem to prevent rot. Allow to ripen in a warm, dry place, then store at 10-12°C , with 55-75% humidity and good air circulation.
