Organic bitter melon squash ( Momordica charantia ) – offered by Gaia, an exotic vegetable with multiple benefits

Bitter melon , also called bitter gourd , is a tropical climbing plant prized in Asian and Indian cuisine for its unique, slightly bitter and refreshing flavor . It is often used in curries, stir-fries and soups , where it perfectly absorbs the flavors of spices and sauces.

In traditional Chinese medicine , it is considered a cooling vegetable , valued for its digestive and detoxifying properties . It grows best in a warm, full-sun location , requiring a sturdy trellis to support its elongated, textured fruits .

Did you know?

Bitter melon is rich in antioxidants, vitamins A and C , and compounds beneficial for sugar metabolism . It is often studied for its potential hypoglycemic properties , particularly in Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine .

Spread : Climbing plant requiring support
Plant height : 1.50 to 2.50 m
Quantity per pack : ± 20 seeds
Companion plants : Beans, radishes, squash, peas
Enemy plants : Potato, aromatic herbs, cucumber

Cultivation method

Sowing is done indoors 3 to 4 weeks before the last frost , then the young plants are transplanted into the ground when temperatures exceed 15°C at night .

Plant in rich, well-drained soil , and space plants 3 to 4 feet apart . As this squash climbs quickly, it requires a sturdy trellis to ensure well-formed, straight fruits . Regular watering , without excess, promotes healthy growth and limits excessive bitterness in the fruits.

Harvesting and conservation

The fruits should be harvested young , when they are 20 to 25 cm long , before they begin to turn yellow and become too bitter .

They will keep for a few days in the refrigerator , but are best fresh . For longer storage, they can be sliced ??and frozen , or dried and ground into powder for culinary or medicinal use.
