The 'Evergreen Hardy White' shallot, also known as Nebuka , is a Japanese heirloom variety dating back to the 1880s, prized for forming dense clumps of white stems without ever producing bulbs or going to seed. Resistant to P. pleuropneumonia and smut , it grows reliably in cool conditions and can even become perennial in mild climates, returning each spring with new divisions. Its stems are crisp, sweet, and aromatic, perfect for fresh cooking. An exceptional variety for continuous harvesting.

Farming method

Sow directly outdoors or start indoors 6 weeks before planting out . Sow in clusters if starting indoors.
Prune the young shoots to 2.5 cm when they reach 12.5 cm to encourage thickening of the stems, and pinch the tip at 10 cm to strengthen the base.
Seed depth: 6–12 mm (1/4–1/2″) .
Install in full sun (level 3) with moderate watering (level 2).
Germination in 7 to 14 days between 7 and 32 °C (optimal 20–25 °C).
Spacing: 5–7 cm between plants, 30–60 cm between rows.


Harvesting and preservation

Shallots are ready to harvest 8 to 12 weeks after sowing . Pick the largest stems first to allow the others to develop and prolong production.
To store: refrigerate fresh stems or freeze sliced ​​stems for later use.
