Organic Peruvian Ground Cherry ( Physalis peruviana ) – offered by Gaia, an exotic fruit with a thousand flavors

The 'Peruvian' ground cherry , also called Peruvian physalis or Cape gooseberry , is a productive and vigorous plant, which produces small, sweet and tangy golden fruits , protected in their delicate papery covering.

Originating from the Andes, this variety is very resistant to summer heat , while requiring little maintenance. Its height of 90 to 120 cm makes it an ideal candidate for gardens, pots and even greenhouses , provided that it has good drainage and adequate staking.

Did you know?

Physalis are rich in vitamins C, A and B , as well as antioxidants and minerals . Very versatile, they can be eaten fresh, in jam, in pastries , or even dehydrated like raisins .

Spread : Bushy plant requiring light staking
Plant height : 90 to 120 cm
Quantity per pack : ± 100 seeds
Companion plants : Basil, parsley, carrot, onion, hot pepper
Enemy plants : Corn, potato, fennel, dill

Cultivation method

Seeds should be started indoors 6-8 weeks before planting , then hardened off before transplanting into the ground once all risk of frost has passed .

Moderate watering is essential: avoid excess nitrogen , which promotes foliage to the detriment of fruit. A support is recommended to limit spreading and optimize the harvest.

Harvesting and conservation

The fruits are ready to be harvested when their skin turns light brown and they fall naturally to the ground .

Ground cherries can be stored for several weeks in their husk , and can be made into jam, dried or used in baking .
