Organic 'Charentais' melon ( Cucumis melo ) from the seed company Gaia, an icon of taste and refinement

The 'Charentais' melon is a true jewel of the French terroir , considered one of the most fragrant and tasty melons in the world . Originating in the Poitou-Charentes region in the early 1920s , it belongs to the European cantaloupe family, but is distinguished by its smooth, creamy-gray skin and slight ribbing .

Its compact format, the size of a grapefruit (about 2 pounds/900 g) , is ideal for a tasting for two . Once cut, it reveals an intense orange flesh, juicy and sweet , exuding a captivating perfume with floral and musky notes . This melon is a must-have for lovers of high-end fruits , as much for gourmet meals as for the simple pleasures of summer .

Cultivation method

The 'Charentais' melon appreciates heat and rich, well-drained soils . It needs exposure to full sun and good irrigation without excess .

  • Soak the seeds in warm water for 12 to 24 hours and lightly scarify the shell to improve germination.
  • Sow directly in open ground 1 to 2 weeks after the last frost , when the soil reaches 23°C .
  • Or start indoors 4 weeks before planting date , for earlier development.
  • Sow 1cm (1/2") deep , spacing plants 60-90cm (24-36") apart and rows 150cm (60") apart.
  • Mulch around the plants to maintain moisture and prevent the fruit from directly touching the ground.
  • Water regularly but not excessively , and reduce watering when the fruit approaches maturity , to concentrate the sugars and enhance the flavor.

Harvesting and conservation

  • Harvest when the skin begins to turn slightly yellow , a sign that the fruit is fully ripe .
  • A sweet, musky scent at the stem indicates it is ready to eat.
  • Keeps for up to 4 weeks in a cool place , but is best enjoyed soon after picking .
  • Avoid refrigeration , which alters its taste and texture.

Ideas for use in the kitchen

  • Serve it chilled, in slices , for a pure and refreshing tasting.
  • Pair it with raw ham or fresh cheese for an irresistible sweet-salty contrast.
  • Mix it into gazpacho or smoothie , for a creamy summer drink.
  • Make a melon granita with a squeeze of lime and a hint of honey.
  • Add it to mixed salads with basil, flaked almonds and a drizzle of olive oil.

With its captivating aroma, its melting flesh and its exceptional culinary heritage , the 'Charentais' melon is a fruit worthy of the finest tables and the most refined summer pleasures !
