Organic watermelon 'Moon & Stars Van Doren'
Organic 'Moon & Stars Van Doren' watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) from the seed company Gaia, a mythical watermelon with golden constellations
The 'Moon & Stars Van Doren' watermelon is a spectacular heirloom variety, famous for its dark green rind dotted with yellow "stars"—small, round spots—and a slightly larger , golden "moon." Even the foliage is speckled , creating a unique cosmic effect in the garden. The oval fruits, about 15 inches in diameter , contain sweet, juicy pink flesh studded with brown seeds. This variety became legendary in 1981 when Merle Van Doren of Macon, Missouri, shared it with the Seed Savers Exchange, reviving its cultivation after decades of neglect.
A mythical watermelon, beautiful like the summer sky and delicious like a rediscovered ancient fruit.
