Start sowing 10 to 12 weeks before transplanting. Sow 3–6 mm deep and, when the seedlings reach 12.5 cm , prune them back to 2.5 cm to encourage a thicker stem. Transplant to full sun (level 3) and water regularly (level 3). Space 7–10 cm apart for medium bulbs and 10–15 cm for large ones, with 45–75 cm between rows. Germination occurs in 6–12 days at temperatures between 7–32 °C (optimum 20–25 °C).

Harvesting and preservation

Harvest when the leaves have dried and shrunk . Allow to ripen in the field for 3 to 5 days , or dry in a greenhouse at 23–26°C with 80% humidity. To prolong dormancy, cool and dry slowly. Ideal storage in a root cellar: 0–1°C , 65–70% humidity.
