Organic 'Big Rainbow' tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) from the seed company Gaia, a giant marbled golden-red tomato, sweet, spectacular and worthy of being a treasure in the vegetable garden

The 'Big Rainbow' tomato is a magnificent heirloom variety, as beautiful as it is delicious. Indeterminate and vigorous, it produces enormous fruits that can reach 1 kg (2 lb) , with luminous golden shoulders streaked with red marbling that blends into the flesh like a sunrise. Its flavor is deliciously sweet, mellow, and slightly fruity , making it an irresistible choice for sandwiches, thick slices, heirloom tomato platters, and summer recipes where it shines as much for its taste as for its presentation.

Although it can be prone to cracking , it more than makes up for it with a generous production that continues until the first frosts , offering an impressive yield for a tomato of this size. 'Big Rainbow' is often described as 'the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow,' as its flesh and skin appear to be painted with warm and vibrant colors.

Farming method

Sow indoors 6 to 8 weeks before planting out . Bury the seeds 3–6 mm deep in a light potting mix, maintaining a temperature of 23–29°C for germination in 5 to 10 days . During hardening off, reduce watering and nitrogen application to strengthen the seedling structure.

Transplant when all risk of frost has passed. Space plants 60 to 90 cm apart, with 120 to 180 cm between rows. Provide full sun (level 3) , regular watering (level 3) , and extremely sturdy staking , as the fruits are heavy and large.

Harvesting and preservation

Harvest when the golden-orange and red colors are fully developed. Like many giant tomatoes, 'Big Rainbow' can split if overwatered near maturity; maintain consistent watering. Alternatively, harvest at the first blush , then allow to ripen at 22°C or higher . Store between 12–21°C with 95% relative humidity .

Usage ideas

• Magnificent in thick slices , where its marbling shines
• Perfect for platters of heirloom tomatoes , colorful and spectacular
• Delicious in summer salads with basil and olive oil
• Excellent when cooked gently ; its sweetness concentrates without bitterness
• Ideal for giant sandwiches , with a melt-in-your-mouth texture and sweet taste

'Big Rainbow' is a legendary tomato: immense, luminous, sweet, and sumptuously marbled. An essential heirloom variety for those who love to cultivate beauty, generosity… and show-stopping tomatoes.
