Farming method

Sow indoors 6 to 8 weeks before planting time . Plant seeds 3–6 mm deep in light potting soil at 23–29 °C for germination in 5 to 10 days . During hardening off, reduce watering and nitrogen to produce strong, well-formed seedlings.

Transplant when all risk of frost has passed. Space plants 60 to 90 cm (24–36") apart and allow 120 to 180 cm (4–6') between rows. Plant in full sun , with regular watering (level 3) . Sturdy staking is essential to support the heavy fruit and vigorous growth.

Harvesting and preservation

Harvest when the fruit reaches a deep chocolate color and is slightly soft to the touch. To advance the harvest, pick at the first sign of blush , then allow to ripen off the vine at 22°C or higher . Store the fruit at 12–21°C , below 95% relative humidity , to preserve its dense, velvety texture.
