Organic 'Black Icicle' tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) from the seed company Gaia, a slender, dark tomato, rich, earthy and irresistibly refined

The 'Black Icicle' tomato is a remarkable heirloom variety, prized for its elongated, deep purplish-brown, almost black, fruits that resemble ebony stalactites. Their elegant, regular shape makes them a favorite among chefs for presentation, while their rich, sweet, slightly earthy flavor, typical of large black tomatoes, immediately wins over lovers of complex tastes.

Indeterminate and productive, it offers a beautiful harvest of firm, fleshy fruits, suitable for both fresh eating and refined culinary uses: rich sauces, roasted tomatoes, gourmet salads, or decorative slices. 'Black Icicle' combines artisanal beauty and aromatic depth in a unique format that's hard to forget.

Farming method

Sow indoors 6 to 8 weeks before planting time . Plant seeds 3–6 mm deep in light potting soil at 23–29 °C for germination in 5 to 10 days . Reduce watering and nitrogen during hardening off to encourage strong stems and a healthy growth habit.

Transplant after all risk of frost has passed. Space plants 60 to 90 cm apart, with 120 to 180 cm between rows. Provide full sun , regular watering (level 3) , and sturdy staking , essential for supporting the long, slender fruit clusters.

Harvesting and preservation

Harvest when the purplish-brown color is fully developed and the fruit yields slightly to pressure. To advance the harvest, pick when the fruit develops a first dark blush , then allow it to ripen off the vine at 22°C or above . Store at 12–21°C , with 95% relative humidity.

Usage ideas

• Magnificent in chef's salads , with its refined appearance and black color
• Excellent for decorative slices , with a mild and complex flavor
