Organic 'Dark Galaxy' Tomato
Organic 'Dark Galaxy' tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) from the seed company Gaia, a small, cosmic, purple, speckled, and absolutely unique tomato
The 'Dark Galaxy' tomato is one of the most spectacular and artistic varieties you can grow. Indeterminate and mid-season, it produces small fruits weighing 1 to 3 oz , but their modest size is more than compensated for by their phenomenal appearance . Still genetically young (3 generations), the variety is remarkably stable, with only slight variations in size.
The unripe fruits start out green, marked with purple anthocyanin scars and dark spots. As they ripen, the tomato transforms: the base turns rust-red , while the top becomes covered in black hues dotted with light spots and speckles , creating an almost 3D effect, hence its name “Dark Galaxy.” This stellar pattern makes it one of the most photographed and sought-after tomatoes among collectors.
Its flavor is pleasant, sweet and tangy, and the plants are vigorous, requiring sturdy support. A perfect variety for gardeners who love growing truly exceptional tomatoes.

Farming method
Sow indoors 6 to 8 weeks before planting out . Place the seeds 3–6 mm (1/8–1/4") deep in a light potting mix. Maintain a temperature of 23–29 °C for germination in 5 to 10 days . During hardening off, reduce water and nitrogen to strengthen the seedlings.
Transplant after all risk of frost has passed. Space plants 60 to 90 cm (24–36") apart, leaving 120 to 180 cm (4–6') between rows. Provide full sun , regular watering (level 3) , and sturdy staking , as this variety is vigorous.
Harvesting and preservation
Harvest when the fruit displays its full galaxy effect : red base, speckled purple-black top. To hasten ripening, pick fruit that has already shown its first color , then let it ripen at 22°C or higher outside the vineyard. Store at 12–21°C , under 95% relative humidity , to preserve its texture.
