Organic 'Gary O'Sena' tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) from the seed company Gaia, a rich, smoky and absolutely sumptuous Brandywine × Cherokee Purple cross

The 'Gary O'Sena' tomato is a modern heirloom gem, the result of crossing two legendary varieties: Brandywine and Cherokee Purple . Developed by breeder Keith Mueller, it combines the best of each: the silky texture and sweetness of Brandywine, with the aromatic depth and signature smoky note of Cherokee Purple. Indeterminate, vigorous, and with potato-like foliage , it produces large, purplish-pink beefsteak fruits, weighing 6 to 14 oz , often distinguished by curved shoulders and a clean, spotless surface.

The flavor is exceptional: rich, fruity, slightly smoky, with a complexity worthy of the finest heirloom tomatoes. Early-maturing for a beefsteak tomato of this size, 'Gary O'Sena' also offers excellent productivity , making it a sought-after variety for farmers' markets, gourmet sandwiches, and tasting platters.

Farming method

Sow indoors 6 to 8 weeks before planting out . Place the seeds 3–6 mm (1/8–1/4") deep in a light potting mix and maintain a stable temperature of 23–29°C , ensuring germination in 5 to 10 days . Reduce water and nitrogen during the hardening-off period to produce strong seedlings.

Transplant outdoors after the last frost. Space plants 60 to 90 cm (24–36") apart, leaving 120 to 180 cm (4–6') between rows. Plant in full sun (level 3) , water regularly (level 3), and install sturdy supports , essential for supporting large fruit.

Harvesting and preservation

Harvest when the tomatoes have fully developed their deep purplish-pink color. To encourage earlier ripening, pick those that have already begun to color , then let them ripen off the vine at 22°C or higher . Store them at 12–21°C , under 95% relative humidity , to maintain their melting texture.

Usage ideas

• Exceptional in thick slices , ideal for premium sandwiches
• Perfect for heirloom tomato platters , where its deep purple color is appealing
• Delicious in rich salads , combined with basil, mozzarella or burrata
• Superb when cooked gently , where its sweetness and smoky note are concentrated

The 'Gary O'Sena' tomato is an exceptional variety: complex, fragrant, smoky, flavorful, and generous—a true tribute to the two legends from which it originates. A must-have for gardeners passionate about rich and aromatic heirloom tomatoes.
