Farming method
Sow indoors 6 to 8 weeks before planting out . Sow seeds 3–6 mm (1/8–1/4") deep in a light potting mix and maintain a stable temperature of 23–29°C for rapid germination (5–10 days). Reduce watering and nitrogen during the hardening-off period to strengthen the seedlings.
Transplant after all risk of frost has passed. Space plants 60 to 90 cm (24–36") apart and allow 120 to 180 cm (4–6') between rows. Place them in full sun , with regular watering (level 3) . Sturdy staking is essential to support the hollow but heavy fruit.
Harvesting and preservation
Harvest when the fruit has fully developed its cream and golden hues . To advance the harvest, pick those that have shown their first color , then let them ripen off the vine at 22°C or above . Store between 12–21°C , at 95% relative humidity , to maintain their firm texture.
