Organic 'Gun Metal Gray' tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) from Gaia seed company, a dark pink beefsteak with metallic highlights, rich, meaty and subtly smoky

The 'Gun Metal Gray' tomato, developed by renowned breeder Dean Slater , is a heritage variety of rare elegance. Indeterminate and productive, it is distinguished by its deep pink skin adorned with metallic, steel-grey highlights —an unusual appearance that gives it its name and instantly catches the eye in the garden and in the kitchen. Its large, meaty fruits, typical of beefsteak tomatoes , reveal bright red flesh with a sweet-tart flavor , enhanced by a subtle smoky aroma , making it an exceptional tomato for fresh slices, tasting platters, gourmet sandwiches, or colorful recipes.

The plants, reaching 90 to 120 cm (3 to 4 feet) in height, require sturdy staking. This variety can have regular or potato-shaped leaves , both considered normal and stable, although slight variations may occur. 'Gun Metal Gray' matures mid-season and easily ranks among the most remarkable heirloom tomatoes for its appearance and flavor.

Farming method

Sow indoors 6 to 8 weeks before planting out . Place the seeds 3–6 mm (1/8–1/4") deep in a light potting mix. Maintain a temperature of 23–29°C for germination in 5 to 10 days . During the hardening-off period, reduce watering and nitrogen to strengthen the seedlings.

Transplant after all risk of frost has passed. Space plants 60 to 90 cm (24 to 36") apart with 120 to 180 cm (4 to 6') between rows. Provide full sun (level 3) , water regularly (level 3) , and install sturdy supports , essential for supporting the heavy fruit and vigorous growth.

Harvesting and preservation

Harvest when the fruit displays a metallic pink hue and a slight yield to the touch. To bring forward the harvest, pick those that have already shown their first color , then let them ripen off the vine at 22°C or higher . Store them at 12–21°C , under 95% relative humidity , to preserve their juiciness and delicate aroma.
