Organic 'Japanese Dwarf' Tomato
Organic 'Japanese Dwarf' tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) from the seed company Gaia, a small, compact Russian dwarf variety, productive and perfect for small spaces
The 'Japanese Dwarf' tomato—despite its name, a heirloom variety of Russian origin —is a beautiful dwarf tomato bred for growing in small spaces. Determinate, compact, and extremely structured, it forms a small, tree-like plant about 40 to 50 cm tall and 30 cm wide , with regular, rough foliage. It produces abundant small, bright red , round to oblong tomatoes weighing 30 to 70 g (1 to 3 oz) . Their flavor is sweet to sweet-tart, offering a fresh and pleasant balance, ideal for snacking, everyday salads, or container gardening.
Thanks to its compact size, surprising productivity, and rapid maturity ( 50–60 days ), 'Japanese Dwarf' is an excellent option for balconies, patios, urban gardens, or even growing in 2- to 3-gallon pots. A robust, charming, and delightfully practical variety.

Farming method
Sow indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost . Place the seeds 3–6 mm (1/8–1/4") deep in a light potting mix and maintain a temperature between 23 and 29°C for germination in 5 to 10 days . Reduce watering and nitrogen during hardening-off to produce sturdy, robust plants.
Transplant into the garden or into pots after all risk of frost has passed. Space plants 30 to 45 cm (12 to 18 inches) apart, with 120 to 180 cm (4 to 6 feet) between rows. Provide full sun (level 3) and regular watering (watering level 3) . Thanks to its determined and compact growth habit, minimal staking is sufficient.
Harvesting and preservation
Harvest when the fruit reaches a uniform bright red color. For an earlier start to the harvest, pick those showing their first signs of color , then let them ripen off the vine at 22°C or above . Store between 12 and 21°C , at 95% relative humidity , to preserve their juicy texture.
