Organic 'Moonglow' tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) from the seed company Gaia, a bright, vibrant orange, sweet and superbly textured, a tasting champion

The 'Moonglow' tomato is an exceptional heirloom variety, crowned winner of the Seed Savers Exchange tasting in 2007 , an honor reserved for the most flavorful tomatoes. Indeterminate and reliable, it produces magnificent, uniform, bright orange globes with dense, firm, and nearly seedless flesh, renowned for offering one of the best textures among golden-yellow tomatoes. Its flavor is mild, slightly sweet , and very well-balanced, making it as enjoyable to eat fresh as it is to cook with.

'Moonglow' is also prized for its remarkable storage capacity: its fruits keep long after harvest without losing their quality. A productive, stable, and consistent variety, it has become a favorite among gardeners who love rich, sweet orange tomatoes.

Farming method

Sow indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost. Sow seeds 3–6 mm (1/8–1/4") deep in a light potting mix. Maintain a stable temperature of 23–29°C until germination (5 to 10 days). Then reduce watering and nitrogen during hardening-off to strengthen the seedlings.

Transplant when there is no longer a risk of frost. Space plants 60 to 90 cm (24 to 36 inches) apart, with 120 to 180 cm (4 to 6 feet) between rows. Provide full sun (level 3) , regular watering (watering level 3) , and sturdy staking to support abundant fruit production.

Harvesting and preservation

Harvest when the fruit reaches a uniform bright orange color . To get a head start, pick the fruit as soon as it begins to color , then let it ripen off the vine at 22°C or above . Store between 12 and 21°C with 95% relative humidity — 'Moonglow' is known for its excellent keeping qualities.
