Organic 'Morden Yellow' tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) from Gaia seed company, an early Canadian sun-yellow, sweet and perfectly uniform

The 'Morden Yellow' tomato is a heritage variety developed in the 1950s at the Morden Research Station in Manitoba. Born from a breeding program aimed at creating tomatoes adapted to cool climates and short growing seasons, it quickly distinguished itself for its remarkable earliness , hardiness, and vibrant sunny yellow color . Its round, uniform, medium-sized fruits offer a sweet, light, and refreshing flavor, ideal for summer salads and colorful dishes where brightness and delicacy are desired. Indeterminate and vigorous, this variety produces consistently even in challenging conditions, making it a valuable ally for northern gardens.

Its juicy, balanced flesh, lacking pronounced acidity, makes it particularly appreciated by those seeking a mild tomato that's easy to incorporate into their cooking. Its simple appearance and flavor perfectly embody traditional Canadian horticulture: efficient, hardy, and delicious.

Farming method

Sow indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost. Sow seeds 3–6 mm (1/8–1/4") deep in light potting mix and maintain a temperature of 23–29°C for germination in 5 to 10 days . During hardening off, reduce watering and nitrogen application to encourage strong seedlings well-adapted to outdoor conditions.

Transplant outdoors once all risk of frost has passed. Space plants 60 to 90 cm (24 to 36 inches) apart and leave 120 to 180 cm (4 to 6 feet) between rows. Provide full sun (level 3) and regular watering (watering level 3) . Sturdy staking is recommended to support vigorous growth and continuous fruit production.

Harvesting and preservation

Harvest when the fruits have developed a beautiful, uniform, sunny yellow color. To get an earlier harvest, pick tomatoes that have already begun to color , then let them ripen off the vine at 22°C or higher . Store them between 12 and 21°C with 95% relative humidity to preserve their soft texture and freshness.
