Organic 'Palestinian' tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) from the seed company Gaia, a majestic red heart-shaped beefsteak, rooted in Palestinian agricultural heritage

The 'Palestinian' tomato is a remarkable heirloom variety, passed down through generations within the farming communities of Palestine. Indeterminate, vigorous, and drought-resistant , it produces very large , heart-shaped beefsteak-type fruits, typically weighing between 300 and 600 g . Their glossy red skin encases crimson flesh that is juicy and aromatic , boasting a rich, tangy, and vibrant flavor, typical of the great heirloom tomatoes of the Levant. Its productivity and dense flesh make it an ideal variety for thick slices, hearty salads, or cooked Mediterranean dishes.

Beyond its exceptional flavor, 'Palestinian' embodies a precious agricultural heritage: the horticultural diversity of the Middle East, where heart-shaped tomatoes have long been traditionally cultivated. Its hardiness and ability to tolerate heat and drought add to its value, making it a variety as much cultural as it is culinary.

Farming method

Sow indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost. Bury the seeds 3–6 mm (1/8–1/4") deep in a light potting mix and maintain a temperature of 23–29°C for germination in 5 to 10 days . Reduce watering and nitrogen during hardening off to produce strong seedlings ready for summer heat.

Transplant when all risk of frost has passed. Plant them 60 to 90 cm (24 to 36") apart, with 120 to 180 cm (4 to 6') between rows. Provide full sun (level 3) , regular watering (watering level 3) , and install sturdy supports , necessary to support the considerable weight of its large fruit.

Harvesting and preservation

Harvest when the fruit has turned a deep crimson. To get a head start, pick the fruit that has already begun to color , then let it ripen off the vine at 22°C or higher . Store it at 12-21°C with 95% relative humidity to preserve its freshness and plump texture.

Usage ideas

• Delicious in thick slices , ideal for sandwiches and Mediterranean salads
• Delicious in cooked dishes , stews or grilled, where its dense flesh shines
• Perfect for plates of heirloom tomatoes , providing a classic beefsteak aesthetic
• Excellent in coulis or rich sauces , thanks to its density and pronounced aroma
