Organic 'Paul Robeson' Tomato
Organic 'Paul Robeson' tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) from the seed company Gaia, a legendary black tomato with a sweet and smoky flavor, revered by collectors.
The 'Paul Robeson' tomato is one of the world's most celebrated heirloom varieties, almost cult-like among passionate gardeners and connoisseurs. Originating in Russia and named in honor of the African-American opera singer, actor, and activist Paul Robeson—a symbol of artistry, dignity, and justice—this tomato carries within it a powerful history and an equally profound character. Indeterminate and prolific, it produces 7- to 10-ounce fruits of a velvety brick-black , sometimes tinged with deep red or mahogany brown.
Its flavor is what makes it unforgettable: sweet, rich, complex, slightly smoky , with an almost umami depth that few varieties can match. It is this exceptional quality that has earned it its legendary reputation among heirloom tomato tastings. Its flesh is juicy, dense, and refined, perfect sliced, in rich salads, or in dishes that showcase authentic black tomatoes.

Farming method
Sow indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost. Plant the seeds 3–6 mm (1/8–1/4") deep in a light potting mix and maintain a temperature of 23–29°C to ensure rapid germination in 5 to 10 days . Reduce watering and nitrogen during hardening off to produce stronger seedlings before transplanting.
Transplant when all risk of frost has passed. Space plants 60 to 90 cm (24 to 36 inches) apart, with 120 to 180 cm (4 to 6 feet) between rows. Provide full sun (level 3) and regular watering (watering level 3) . Sturdy staking is essential, as the plants produce large fruit and grow vigorously.
Harvesting and preservation
Harvest when the fruit has reached its characteristic brick-black color and feels slightly soft to the touch. To hasten the harvest, pick the fruit that has just begun to color , then let it ripen off the vine at 22°C or higher . Store it between 12 and 21°C with 95% relative humidity to maintain its rich flavor and juicy texture.
