Organic 'Russian Swirl' tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) from Gaia seed company, a swirling bicolor with subtle charm and generous production

The 'Russian Swirl' tomato is a fascinating heirloom variety, belonging to the tree-type tomato group, renowned for their compact habit yet remarkable vigor. Productive and stable, it forms a dense plant 80 to 90 cm tall, with regular, rough leaves, easily supporting heavy fruiting. Its smooth, medium-sized fruits generally weigh between 115 and 340 g and have an elegant oblate shape. Their golden-yellow skin, streaked with red, creates a vibrant marbled effect, worthy of the finest bicolor tomatoes. Their flavor is balanced, sweet, and slightly fruity, comparable to that of large indeterminate bicolor varieties, but with the practicality and compactness of a dwarf plant.

Mature in approximately 80 days , 'Russian Swirl' offers a reliable and prolific harvest. Its flesh is firm yet juicy, perfect for eating fresh, heirloom tomato platters, or recipes where you want to add a colorful and artistic touch. It's a refined variety that elegantly combines beauty and flavor.

Farming method

Sow indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost. Place the seeds 3–6 mm (1/8–1/4") deep in a light potting mix, then maintain a temperature of 23–29°C for rapid germination, usually within 5 to 10 days . Reduce watering and nitrogen during hardening off to produce strong, compact seedlings before transplanting.

Transplant outdoors once all risk of frost has passed. Space plants 60 to 90 cm (24 to 36 inches) apart with 120 to 180 cm (4 to 6 feet) between rows. Provide full sun (level 3) and regular watering (watering level 3) . Although compact, this variety remains indeterminate and therefore benefits from sturdy staking to support its numerous and often heavy fruits.

Harvesting and preservation

Harvest when the yellow color is fully marbled with red and the whorls are clearly visible. To bring forward the harvest, pick the fruit at its first sign of color , then let it ripen off the vine at 22°C or above . Store between 12 and 21°C with 95% relative humidity to preserve its texture and delicate aroma.

Usage ideas

• Looks stunning in trays of heirloom tomatoes , where its marbling creates an elegant visual contrast.
• Delicious freshly sliced , thanks to its balanced flavor and juicy texture
• Perfect for summer salads , colorful bowls, and artistic recipes
• Interesting when lightly roasted , which concentrates its sweet nuances

The 'Russian Swirl' tomato is a small work of botanical art: compact yet bountiful, sweet yet aromatic, discreet yet captivating with its swirls of color. A must-have variety for lovers of bicolored tomatoes who want a productive plant that's easy to incorporate into any vegetable garden.
