Organic 'Sachan' Tomato
Organic 'Reisetomate' tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) from the seed company Gaia, a segmented heirloom tomato with a tangy character
The 'Reisetomate' tomato, sometimes associated with the name Sachan , develops spectacular, irregularly shaped fruits composed of fused segments resembling a cluster of cherry tomatoes welded together. This unique morphology allows the fruit to be detached piece by piece , earning it the nickname " traveling tomato ," ideal for eating on the go without a knife. The fruits are large , often classified as XL, with an organic and sculptural appearance.
The flavor is bold, tangy, and intense , with a pronounced acidity that clearly distinguishes it from modern sweet tomatoes. This heirloom variety is valued more for its originality , its portability , and its vibrant flavor profile than for traditional slicing. The plant is vigorous with an indeterminate growth habit , requiring good staking to support its continuous growth.

Farming method
Sow indoors 6 to 8 weeks before planting out , at a depth of 3 to 6 mm , in a light, well-drained potting mix. Germination occurs in 5 to 10 days , at an optimal temperature of 23 to 29°C . During the acclimatization phase, reducing watering and nitrogen application will result in stronger plants.
Transplant when nighttime temperatures exceed 10°C (50°F) , spacing plants 60 to 90 cm ( 24 to 35 in) apart, with rows 120 to 180 cm (48 to 75 in) apart . Staking is essential , as the plant has an indeterminate growth habit and continues to grow throughout the season. Provide full sun (level 3) and regular watering (level 3) .
Maturity is reached in approximately 80 days after transplanting.
Harvesting and preservation
For optimal flavor, harvest when the fruit is fully ripe and its color is well-developed. It is also possible to pick the fruit at the beginning of coloring and then let it ripen off the vine at 22°C or higher . Store tomatoes at 12 to 21°C with high relative humidity .
