‘Striped Cavern’ Tomato, organic seeds (Solanum lycopersicum)
Solanum lycopersicum
‘Striped Cavern’ Tomato, organic seeds (Solanum lycopersicum) Striped Cavern is an open-pollinated heirloom tomato certified organic by Ecocert Canada. Gaia describes 8-ounce, blocky, pepper-shaped fruit with red and yellow stripes. Its lobed, partially hollow structure contains few seeds, making it convenient for stuffing. The delicate skin suits cooking, and Gaia describes the variety as a prolific producer with good keeping ability. The indeterminate plant reaches 4 to 5 feet and requires a sturdy cage or stake. Its distinctive shape also creates an attractive presentation when the filled fruit is baked and served whole.
Start seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before transplanting, approximately 1/8 to 1/4 inch deep. Gaia lists germination in 5 to 10 days from 21 to 32°C, with an optimum of 23 to 29°C. Keep the mix moist without standing water and provide bright light after emergence. Harden plants off gradually by reducing water and nitrogen without allowing wilt. Transplant after frost risk has passed into fertile, well-drained soil in full sun. Space plants 24 to 36 inches apart and rows 4 to 6 feet apart. Install support at planting time to avoid disturbing established roots later.
Gaia lists 80 to 90 days to maturity and good keeping ability. Harvest after the red and yellow stripes are fully expressed for the best taste. Fruit that has begun colouring can finish ripening off the vine above 21°C. The packet contains approximately 25 organic seeds, lot GO24008, with reported germination above 85%. Store whole tomatoes from 12 to 21°C at approximately 95% relative humidity. Handle the delicate skin carefully and use split or bruised fruit promptly after removing damaged tissue. Keep the cultivar label beside the plant until the final harvest.
