Organic 'Taxi Yellow' tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) from the seed company Gaia, an ultra-early variety perfect for short growing seasons

The 'Taxi Yellow' tomato is a heirloom variety highly prized by gardeners in cooler climates for its rapid maturation and high productivity over a short period. Compact and robust, it reaches approximately 60 cm (2′) in height and width, making it an excellent option for small spaces, containers, urban gardens, and tight borders. Its bright yellow, sweet, and non-acidic fruits are harvested abundantly for 3 to 4 weeks, offering a vibrant flavor ideal for lunchboxes, salads, and fresh salsas.

Although sometimes considered semi-determinate according to some sources, the Gaia selection describes it as indeterminate , ensuring continuous growth as long as conditions are favorable.

Farming method

Sow indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost. Sow 3–6 mm (1/8–1/4") deep in a light potting mix and maintain a temperature between 23 and 29 °C for rapid germination in 5 to 10 days. Reduce watering and nitrogen during hardening off to produce stronger seedlings.

Transplant outdoors after all risk of frost has passed, spacing plants 60 to 90 cm (24 to 36 inches) apart in rows 120 to 180 cm (4 to 6 feet) apart. Provide a location in full sun (level 3) and water regularly (watering level 3). Due to its indeterminate growth habit, staking is recommended even though the plant remains compact.

Harvesting and preservation

Harvest when the fruit is a deep, uniform yellow. To advance the harvest, pick as soon as the first hint of yellow appears, then allow to ripen off the vine at a temperature of 22°C or higher. Store the fruit between 12 and 21°C with a relative humidity of approximately 95%.
